People and Culture in Indore

Located in Madhya Pradesh in the center of India, the ancient Indore City has come a long way in terms of living conditions, schools, and commercial businesses. Known for its cultural diversity and customs, Indore is a favorite tourist spot and haven for all people.

With a large population of about 1.8 million, Indore City has attracted residents from all parts of India. Its progressive and mixed cultures plus the guarantee that people of all castes, colors, and religions are welcome, makes Indore City truly diverse. Despite the fundamentalist Hindu government in place over India, there is a major effort in Indore to encourage religious tolerance for all religions including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam. A variety of languages are also commonly spoken in Indore, including Hindi, English, and Malvi.

With over fifty schools covering subjects such as nursing, engineering, science, pharmacy and commerce, many Indians come to Indore for an education – knowledge that they will take back to their own communities. Several famous institutions are centered in Indore City, including the Indore University and the International Institute of Professional Studies.

Although Indore used to be a city of slums and unsanitary waste dumps, steps have been taken to relieve this problem in modern times through Slum Networking, which used the natural drainage paths and environmental construction to rebuild a healthier, cleaner city. Houses were built, storm and sewage drains were constructed, and bodies of fresh water were created. Today, Indore is one of the cleanest most advanced cities in India in terms of education, homes, and tourist attractions.
