Madhya Pradesh is known all over India for its ancient ruins, beautiful landscapes, and other tourist attractions. Indore City is a major contributor to this reputation, with ruins like the remains of the ancient palace of the Holkars in its main square, the Kanch Mandir, a building of glass, and Krishnapura Chhatris – three cenotaphs of the Holkar rulers. The temple Bada Ganapati holds the largest Ganesh figure in the world, measuring 25 ft. Also included in Indore City’s major sites is the Khajrana temple to Ganesh, which was built by Rani Ahilya Bai. It is believed that when one prays there, their wishes will come true. Geeta Bhavan shows the true diversity and tolerance of Indore City. This structure is a hall used for religious discourses. Open to anyone, this hall has statues of Gods from all religions. The Mahatma Ghandi hall was built in 1904 as King Edward Hall, but in 1948 is was renamed. With domes and steeples as well as a clock on the front of the building, it is a defining feature of Indore City. The Indore Museum is a large building holding Parmar sculptures from Hinglajgarh as well as large collections of coins, arms, and armors. The Parmar sculptures originated in Indore and characteristically have proportionated figures depicted in stone. In another amazing temple, the Annapurna Mandir four life-sized elephants hold the ornate gate to the temple. Indore City is a beautiful cultural city that shows the essence of ancient and modern Indian culture at its best with beautiful temples, palaces, and the landscapes of the warm central Indian climate |
